There is much to write about with the Boer-Goats-Blog, and as goat breeders and raising a big herd of commercial goats we have a lot going on every day. We aim to update you with as possible, tricks, hacks and lessons learned, there are so many things to impart. Every day is a learning experience. So if you are a meat goat producer then we do hope we can share our learnings with you.
What do you need to know? Well we are into refining Boer goat nutrition, and we also are into health of our goats. So much to know and trying assume the role of a vet is not easy. One thing that is not common is a goat specialist vet, and we all know how expensive a vet is. Also we have learnt much about hoof care and animal handlers, finally having resolved that challenge. The 3 golden rules of goats are Fencing, Fencing and Fencing. We have invested much and learnt a lot with fencing, including electric fencing. We are just going through kidding and with nearly 300 kids on the ground its hectic. There is controlling issues such as scours, or getting vaccination program completed. Then we have the hoof care issue, you really have to get that under control early. Animal behaviour is really important, as most know they don't behave like sheep, they have to be handled completely different. Most equipment is sheep derived and of course they don't always if ever suit goats. You have to modify and design your own. Stockyard designs need to be looked at and changed, we have performed several changes and we have a yard and races and handlers that we can handle our Dorper sheep with as well as the Boer Goats. Drenching is a big issue and parasite control is a major challenge to raising goats. We have done much research and experimentation with various drenches, along with testing and so on. Drenching a herd of goats is rather intimidating and fraught with risk, no matter how domesticated they are, they hate it and I do too, and I have the bruises and scrapes from their horns to prove it. More on that later on our website as we explore and show you how we have coped with the problems. So stay tuned, check out our Boer-Goats-blog and input your own experiences where you can.
