Mudgee-Small-Farm Field Days

About Mudgee-Small-Farm Field Days

This years Mudgee-Small-Farm Field Days is the 30th anniversary since the event started. The field days at Mudgee have many exhibitors and events to learn the basics or improve your knowledge about small farming, rural education, the latest in agricultural services and products, vendors and exhibits and all about rural living. There are live stock displays and competitions, food stalls, entertainment and lot more. More than 28,000 people attend the show each year. Also you can taste local foods and what Mudgee is also famous for, its wines

In the beginning it as all about how to build a straight fence, or how to milk a cow or goat properly and what to do when your axe blade is blunt and how to sharpen it. You can still learn these basic skills however these days its also about electric fencing, modern milking equipment and sharpening chainsaw blades, as well and extensive program of free information seminars and lots of demonstrations with specialists transferring their special knowledge on subjects that range from organics and soil management, all about working dogs and horses, horticulture, viticulture, poultry, machinery, salinity and aviation. There is around 400 free talks and lectures along with demonstrations, 13 different breeds of cattle, goats, sheep and alpacas and a lot more.

Another major attraction for farmers is the NSW Department of Primary Industries agronomy site. The site has over 200 pasture species and varieties, including native pastures on show. This is a living classroom that was established so that farmers and landholders are able to learn what the various pastures types available are and choose the ones that match their own specific properties and enterprises. This is a bog one for me as I improve my pastures for goat production. The display features various annual grasses and legumes, also salt and acid tolerant pastures, there are forage crops, and pastures suited for light and heavy soils as well as perennial pastures, the latter being very important following drought conditions.
