Mudgee – All you Need to Know
ALL ABOUT MUDGEE
The word Mudgee is aboriginal for Nest in the Hills and is used to describe the large undulating valley that is ringed by ancient, and extinct volcanoes. This valley is where the town and other nearby towns are located.
These days the area is a renowned centre for fine wines, food, arts and crafts, fine wool, mining, honey and agriculture. The town was settled in the 1820’s and is the send oldest town west of the mountains.
It was very important at the peak of the gold rush in the 1850’s and while gold mining still happens in these high gold price times, agriculture is also important along with the wine.
Spring and autumn are characterized by moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights, and this makes great grape growing conditions.
There is much to do and this includes 4 WD activities, some great bush walking and canoeing, some good fishing, gold panning and bird watching. There is also much art, antiques and ceramics to hunt for. The gastronomically inclined like myself this is food central and with some 40 vineyards and places to eat.
Local Tourism and Attractions
Food is a centre of attraction and it has achieved fame for everything from conserves and tapenades, to mustards, wine jellies, vinegars, olive oils and famous Mudgee honey.
There are many event going on around the year, and this includes The Wine Celebration in September, The Henry Lawson Festival (Gulgong) in June, the Small Farm Field Days happens in July (this is a great hobby framer and smaall farmer event, don’t miss it). The best small-farm field day and exposition in the world, from goats (it’s a major goat area) and alpacas, tractors to cattle and many other small farm ideas Mudgee-Small-Farm-Field-Days the Huntington Music Festival in November-December, the Mudgee Cup horse race meeting is in December, the Gulgong Folk Festival happens in December-January.

Red wines have achieved some great honours. There are now more than 40 cellar doors open to the public, so you can sample and purchase and meet some of the most innovative wine makers.
