India Goat Slaughter

In Orissa some 650 goats have been sacrificed at a Rakshya Kali temple at Rameswarpur that is part of what is an annual ritual in the Hindu month of Chaitra even though a local government ban is in place. Police witnesses stated that the area around the temple sacrificial altar was soaked in blood.

The poor hapless goats are garlanded prior to be led to the altar and their cries got drowned out by the beating of drums. Evidently some devotees even scramble to touch the blood of the sacrificed goats, as this is believed to be auspicious In 2006 animal rights activists launched large protests when several hundred goats were again sacrificed at the same temple in the presence of Revenue Minister. The same activists then burnt an effigy of the minister in protest at the slaughter. What can one say and at least people are trying to defend the poor goats
